For the last several months I’ve been contemplating a new direction, with the result that several days ago I listed essentially all of my camera equipment on eBay. Tonight, it’s with mixed emotions that I watch the clock tick down on the auctions. One way or another, it gets real in about an hour. </div>
<div style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue'; font-size: 12px; line-height: normal; min-height: 14px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue'; font-size: 12px; line-height: normal;">
I have decided to close my part-time photography business. I have a lot of reasons, some of them potentially very important to me, though if I’m honest, I’m not sure which ones will stand the test of time. Some are personal and some I'll talk about. Ask me in a year and I’ll let you know how it’s working out. But for now I’m going to be spending my time a little bit differently. </div>
<div style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue'; font-size: 12px; line-height: normal; min-height: 14px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue'; font-size: 12px; line-height: normal;">
I am beyond grateful for photography, for my wonderful clients and the experiences we’ve had together, for the opportunity to be part of so many wonderful experiences. I’m incredibly proud of what we accomplished together. There are a ton of things I’ll miss, but there are also a ton of things that I’ll be able to do better. I’ll get a bit more sleep, be a bit more present with friends and family, have more time to devote to my "day job", and have more time to be healthy.</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue'; font-size: 12px; line-height: normal; min-height: 14px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue'; font-size: 12px; line-height: normal;">
Those of you who know me, know that “less” really isn’t in my DNA. I’m going to continue to make and share photographs, hopefully more freely and joyfully than ever, with a much smaller and more mobile kit. I just won’t be doing it for money. And who knows, I might even have more time to write, blog, and generally mess around just for fun. I hope that the things I’ll have time to do better will outweigh the things I’m giving up. </div>
<div style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue'; font-size: 12px; line-height: normal; min-height: 14px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue'; font-size: 12px; line-height: normal;">
I will write about this a little bit more, soon, but when I’ve got a bit more perspective on the whole thing. I always wished I’d had more time to write about and share photography, and with any luck I’ll have time to do that. I’ll also share the new kit when it arrives and hopefully enjoy learning many new things. </div>
<div style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue'; font-size: 12px; line-height: normal; min-height: 14px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue'; font-size: 12px; line-height: normal;">
But for now, the first auction just ended. if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got stuff to box up.</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue'; font-size: 12px; line-height: normal; min-height: 14px;">
<br /></div>
<br />

Probably the single busiest year in my life, there was still time for some adventure.<br />
<br />
In late July, several friends and I teamed up for a go on Mount Rainier. This year's climb was epic in every possible way, which I should take time to share in more detail later. But one thing that really stood out was the great experiences had with other climbers along the way.<br />
<br />
The evening of arrival in Camp Muir is fun time to relax and prepare for the day(s) ahead. Climbers often gather on the rocks looking over the Muir snowfield and watch dusk fall over the expansive view offered by Muir's 10,000 feet of elevation. On Monday night, after setting up our tent, melting snow and making dinner, we made our way over to the loose collection of climbers enjoying the view and made small talk. There, I met Drew and Jessica. Their group's plan was to stay in Muir overnight, move to the Ingraham Flats the next morning, then head for the summit Wednesday morning. Though we were skipping the move to Ingraham, our plans otherwise roughly mirrored theirs.<br />
<br />
As we talked about the days ahead, I learned that Drew and Jessica were planning on getting married the morning of their summit climb. My goodness, what a great plan! I always bring a camera on these adventures and I couldn't resist inquiring as to whether they had a photographer along. Unfortunately, one of their climbing buddies, their shooter, was detained and would be joining later, probably too late to document their big morning. Despite my usual (and standing!) reservations about shooting weddings, this was an opportunity that couldn't be missed - they'd want pictures of their big day and I could not resist the chance to be involved. We agreed that if we were on the summit at the same time, they'd allow me to make some pictures.<br />
<br />
The next morning our group waved to theirs as they packed up and headed to Ingraham Flats. We busied ourselves with the matters of camp, rest, and preparation for the summit day, generally preoccupied with the task at hand. I'd be kidding, though, if I didn't admit I spent a little bit of time figuring out how to approach shooting my first wedding in this incredible but unforgiving environment, if the opportunity arose.<br />
<br />
Wednesday morning around midnight our group roped up and headed out. After six hours of climbing in the dark, we hit the crater just as the sun's welcome rays crept over the rim.<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">It was a gorgeous July morning on the summit of Rainier.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
After we spent a few minutes congratulating each other and taking photos, it was time to head back down. On even the most comfortable morning at the top, there simply isn't much time to waste. These mornings don't happen every day, so I spent a few more moments savoring the view as my group headed back toward their packs for some refueling for the descent. Just as I headed down from the summit I ran into Drew and Jessica again. We chatted briefly and I re-iterated my offer to make some photos for them - that sounded great, they said (I think, anyway, as far as I could hear over the icy breeze!). I was sensitive to my intrusion on their big day, but hoped they'd be happier to have photos when they returned home. We all headed back to the summit where the wedding commenced.<br />

It was cold and windy and I couldn't hear a thing of the ceremony, to be honest, but from what I can tell everything went off without a hitch (wait, that's not quite right, I'm pretty sure there WAS a hitch! Get it? ;-). We exchanged congratulations again and while they savored their moment I headed back to catch up with my group and begin the descent.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">My climbing team takes a break just as we returned to Camp Muir from the summit.</td></tr>

We all ran into each other again on the descent from Muir to Paradise and then parted ways. Several days later Drew emailed me. I uploaded pictures for them and he reiterated what a great trip it was and the amazing support of the climbing community on their big day. A great day, great trip, and great beginning for Drew and Jessica!<br />

I'm going to do some more food photography this next year. Walking by the local cupcake shop this morning sparked an idea and suggested a great way to spend the afternoon! Can't think of a tastier sort of product photography. What happens after the shoot? Well, we're gonna need some more cupcakes... <div>

This is my fifth trip to Oahu in the last 18 months. Yeah, rough, I know. But you know what? Until this trip, I bet you I didn't take 48 hours off to relax, total, four trips combined. This time, had a scant three extra days, which felt like hitting the lottery. All that, and you think I'd have been fired up. Right? So much to see, so many photographs to chase. For a guy who likes <i>nothing</i> more than to go, it was GO TIME.</span><div>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">But this evening the sun was getting low and I just wasn't feeling it. Had a great day. Up at 5, watched the full moon set over Waimea bay, enjoyed sunrise on the beach (latte in hand, natch, and lemme tell you they make some bad-ass coffee here at the coffee shop in the Foodland in Pupukea), swam in the ocean, biked most of the North Shore, visited the Thursday market. By 5pm I was just ready to be done, you know? But Suzanne, God bless her, pointed out (as only someone that knows you, better than you do, can do) that we weren't finished. Deep inside I knew she was right. Hell, my conscience was screaming. There are certain things, no matter how you feel, certain things you don't miss. When you're 2500 miles from home, no matter what brought you there, if there's a breeze in the palms, if the sun is setting into the ocean, well, you gotta show up. </span></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The late Galen Rowell <a href="http://www.dslrbodies.com/technique/magic-moment.html" target="_blank">put it more succinctly</a>, </span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif; line-height: 19px;">"You only get one sunrise and one sunset a day and you only get so many days on the planet. <span style="background-color: white; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif; line-height: 19px;">But by now you get the point. There are No Token Sunsets. </span><br />

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif; line-height: 19px;">So we went out. Got to the beach with, like, two minutes in hand. Fortunately I already knew the first, safe shot. See where it goes from there. </span><br />

Shore of Oahu. Unbelievable breakfast burrito at Kono's, strolled a lovely but surprisingly photography-unfriendly garden, visited <a href="http://www.clarklittlephotography.com/" target="_blank">Clark Little</a>'s gallery, dinner at Cholo's. Then caught the sunset on the beach. </span><div>

Typically we head downtown Boise, but this year we did something different. The group this year is really outdoors-y and took me up on the idea of shooting somewhere along the river. One of the great things about Boise is the opportunity to get a really "outside" feel just a few steps from town, and we took full advantage last night. One of the things I love about shooting in the evening is that, for better or worse, the light changes fast! It's a great opportunity to shoot natural light, strobes, all the lenses, the works. We pulled together several different shots and I hope the group loves them.<br />

At stake was an evening shoot with yours truly. A wonderful Boise couple won the auction (and contributed to a nice haul for a great cause). We settled on an evening this week and began watching the weather. The clients were a little concerned when a rain shower rolled through the area just about an hour before the scheduled shoot, but not to worry (if you don't like the Boise weather in spring, wait 10 minutes!), the weather cleared and it was ON! "By the way, would it be ok if we added the blue '57 Chev to the planned '69 Camaro?" Sure! <div>
<br /><div>
<div>
<div>
I don't know what's more fun, picking a location and shooting these awesome hot rods, or cruising between locations listening to American-made pushrod V-8s rumble down the road. </div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We ended up having a super evening out in Boise, and got what I think are some pretty fun images. The clients were wonderful and were completely cool with sharing, so have a look!</div>

We headed out for a couple of hours just as evening turned in to dusk, quickly cranking through several "looks". <div>
My goal was to really highlight the gorgeous cars, but also to show a little bit of the environment too. We cruised around town, hit several cool locations, and shot like mad. </div>
<div>
Have a look! Which one is your favorite? I have a million more ideas to work out, looks like it's going to take another shoot or three! </div>
<div>
Checking gear, charging batteries, and loading up the car - headed out momentarily to shoot another really special car tonight. It's a secret for now, but tonight's car is a fantastic color. Can't wait to see what images we come back with. Hope to share more soon. But for now, recent work!</div>

Being Memorial Day weekend, we were certain to encounter some weather. Sure enough, it was raining most of the morning before the shoot, and we were running the windshield wipers as we headed out of town, straight into the dark greyness of a stormy spring afternoon. Had a good feeling about the evening, though, and sure enough, the clouds parted just long enough to hit several fun locations. Worked light and fast, and had a fantastic time! Just as we wrapped up downtown Boise after 10pm, the skies opened and it poured again. When you're lucky, you're lucky. We'll take it!<div>

Had an amazing time, perfect weather, just a great trip. The emphasis must remain on climbing, but naturally, there was some photography as well. Mountaineering forces you to make some pretty strict decisions about how much gear is carried, and as usual I brought just one camera and lens, no filters, no tripod.<br />

How long has it been since my last post? (Cue sound of crickets chirping in the distance.) Totally didn't mean to do that. Oh well, the silence is over! Where was I all spring? Working, mostly. Working on some really fun and (hopefully) cool stuff. It may be months overdue, but I've finally got a real space, in real life, with real fine art prints hanging on the wall. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1rURfFi4Ik4/Th-qOHFSihI/AAAAAAAAAHk/ci9oU_nswtY/s1600/20110714_GreenChutes_7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1rURfFi4Ik4/Th-qOHFSihI/AAAAAAAAAHk/ci9oU_nswtY/s400/20110714_GreenChutes_7.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<br />
For the last couple of months, my buddy Jim Bouden (of <a href="http://lightshamanart.com/">Light Shaman Art</a>) and I have been working out details on getting space at <a href="http://greenchutesboise.com/">Green Chutes</a> here in Boise. Green Chutes, located conveniently at State and Collister, is a huge artist's co-op where you can find tons of awesome art, crafts, etc. There are several dozen great artists featured there, and now there are several dozen, plus US. So it's good times. We're sharing space inside one of four large shipping containers which are arrayed throughout the Green Chutes interior - ours is the one in the back right corner of the store. I've opened my display with about a dozen images, ranging from small to quite large, in a variety of finishes and mounts. I hope folks really enjoy them. Many of these images really haven't been shown anywhere before, not even on the walls at home. I'm planning on a refresh at least every three months, putting in a few new images, and although I've got tons of new images to get out and shoot, I also already have a great set of images to release through the next several seasons. Already can't wait for fall! But for now there's plenty to enjoy.<br />
<br />
As a huge, no, serious, huge bonus, Green Chutes shares space with <a href="http://salttears.typepad.com/salt-tears-coffeehouse/">Salt Tears Coffeehouse and Noshery</a>. It's a great little cafe with one of Boise's best lattes, and a bunch of great "nosh" too! So here's what I'd recommend. After first double-checking hours, head on over. Grab a drink at Salt Tears, then spend an hour browsing Green Chutes. Make sure to stop by my little space, the shipping container in the far right corner, and have a look. Then stop back by here or the Curtis Brandt Photography facebook page and let me know what you think! Keep your eyes open too, shortly there'll be a little "open house" where Jim and I will hang out, talk shop, and chat with anybody who wants to come by. So there's tons to look forward to.<br />
<br />
And check back at the blog from time to time too, I'll be adding stuff more regularly, promise! Seriously, there's lots to share... Talk to you soon!<br />

<div style="font: 12px Helvetica; margin: 0px; min-height: 14px;">It was difficult, and somewhat imprudent, to move around on the course once the competition began, so I scouted the hill carefully for safe spots that would provide options for at least a couple of different compositions per run. Add in constantly changing weather, unpredictable action, and working on steep, slippery slopes and you’ve got a recipe for a challenge and a lot of fun, guaranteed!<span style="letter-spacing: 0px;"></span></div><div style="font: 12px Helvetica; margin: 0px; min-height: 14px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0px;"></span></div><div style="font: 12px Helvetica; margin: 0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0px;">Equipment:</span></div><div style="font: 12px Helvetica; margin: 0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0px;">In typical form for sports coverage, I took two camera bodies, a long lens, a medium telephoto, something wide, and a speedlight. The main camera was my trusty Nikon D700. I needed a camera/lens combination with a fast frame rate (preferably 8 fps or above), fast and accurate autofocus, and good weather sealing. As a legion of D700 fans know, it’s hard to beat that camera’s combination of qualities for anywhere near the price. Having used almost all of the Nikon fast super-teles at one point or another, I guessed that the 200-400 f4 would provide a great combination of good reach, (relatively) light weight, manageable size to carry in a backpack I could still function on the hill with, and focal length flexibility as a bonus. Additional gear included an 80-200 f2.8 and 16-35 f4 for any up-close options that may have materialized. The backup body was a D300s. (Thanks <a href="http://www.lensprotogo.com/">Lens Pro To Go</a> for the 200-400 f4 and the D300s!)</span></div><div style="font: 12px Helvetica; margin: 0px; min-height: 14px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0px;"></span></div><div style="font: 12px Helvetica; margin: 0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0px;">Technique:</span></div><div style="font: 12px Helvetica; margin: 0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0px;">Photographing ski racing presents many of the challenges inherent in fast action sports as well as some fairly daunting environmental considerations. My goal was to draw attention to the athletes and convey the conditions they faced, to bring together elements of dynamic composition with peak of action. Given variability in lighting, changing weather conditions, variations in athlete speed and line choice, and a desire to have at least one great image of each competitor, I needed to choose settings which maximized the chance for success. Most of the racing images were at the long end of the 200-400, to allow room for me to be safely out of the way as well as to take advantage of narrow depth of focus in service of subject isolation. While elevated speeds make the longer lens the go-to for racing, an 80-200 is great for freestyle. Another crucial element was fast shutter speed. Artistically, I’d like to experiment more with long shutter speeds and make some images with really long blurs. At the extremes of long shutter speeds with fast action, however, really great images are a low-percentage deal. So in the interest of nailing a sharp image of each competitor I knew I needed to be at or above about 1/1250th. Most of the time the settings hovered around f4.5 and 1/1600th, selected manually. When clouds obscured the sun, I engaged auto-ISO to keep those parameters set while bumping ISO a bit to maintain reasonable exposure. Overall, the D700 meter does an outstanding job in the snow, much better than other cameras I’ve owned. In bright sunlight, there’s a tendency to over-expose about 1/3 to 2/3 of a stop, blowing some highlights. Certain compositions allow for, even require, blown highlights. In flat light in the snow, the matrix meter on the D700, like most cameras, may need positive exposure compensation in the range or +1 EV or even more. It’s best to keep an eye on the conditions and ride the settings a bit to maintain a good overall exposure. After all is said and done, there’s a lot to be said for shooting RAW, relying on a camera that has amazing exposure latitude as well as super-clean high ISO performance. </span></div><div style="font: 12px Helvetica; margin: 0px; min-height: 14px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0px;"></span></div><div style="font: 12px Helvetica; margin: 0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0px;">The 200-400 is hand-holdable for short periods, but not for all day (at least for me). Crucial support elements include a monopod with a sturdy and functional head. Ball heads are wonky on a monopod, but Really Right Stuff makes the perfect long-lens/monopod head. As usual, it worked to perfection. Sometime, however, I need to replace my ancient Bogen monopod which is a fine piece of equipment but totally out of its design parameters sitting under a combo like a pro DSLR and super-tele. Hard to beat carbon fiber for light weight and all-weather functionality. (I think my next monopod will be <a href="http://reallyrightstuff.com/ProductDesc.aspx?code=MC-34&type=4&eq=&desc=MC-34-Carbon-Fiber-Monopod&key=it">this one</a>. You can’t go wrong with Gitzo, but you have to love RRS for their photographer-centric ethos and American Made quality.)</span></div><div style="font: 12px Helvetica; margin: 0px; min-height: 14px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0px;"></span></div><div style="font: 12px Helvetica; margin: 0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0px;">Big thanks are due to: JJ McCloud at <a href="http://www.bogusbasin.org/">Bogus Basin</a>, the organizer Coach Ron Bonneau from College of Idaho, <a href="http://www.lensprotogo.com/">Lens Pro To Go</a>, and <a href="http://www.hotgearbag.com/">Hot Gear</a> for helping start each day with warm toes.</span></div><div style="font: 12px Helvetica; margin: 0px; min-height: 14px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 12px;"><br />

I was sleeping, getting ready for an overnight at work but I couldn't resist getting up just long enough to unbox it and have a look. Now I've had a minute to look more closely and to shoot a quick snap my newest print. This is a pano assembled from about 11 images of the island of Lanai from the Maui/Lanai passenger ferry. These images have been just sitting on my hard drive for a couple of years and it's exciting to finally do something with them. I'm fairly proud of the image, to be sure, and <a href="http://artisticphotocanvas.com/">Artistic Photo Canvas</a> printed it and put it together just GORGEOUSLY. There's something special about a nice big pano, something special about a nicely done canvas wrap, and, wow, just nothing like it when it all comes together. <br />

Exposure was manual, making sure not to blow any highlights. I chose f5.6 because there wasn't much in the close foreground, shot at 1/640 of a second to minimize motion (shooting moving water, from a moving boat). Used just a touch of Nik's Tonal Contrast to bring out midtone contrast. Though it's not visible from here, the print is absolutely detailed, absolutely sharp.</span></span></span></td></tr>

Saves having to order up a water truck anyway, and I doubt I'd have gotten away with hosing down the steps of the Capitol. Made a couple of pictures that I've been looking forward to shooting. <br />

Hope everybody has had a wonderful holiday season so far. There’s just major one left, happens on about the first of January and I’m sure you know what I’m talking about! It’s got me thinking about what’s left of 2010 and what’s ahead in 2011. I’ve got all sorts of fairly sensible resolutions. So I can keep an eye on my progress, I’ve written a few down. But that’s not what this is about! I’ve been blogging about landscape photography recently and I feel like changing gears (pardon the pun) here on the blog a bit.</span></div><div style="font: 12px Helvetica; margin: 0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0px;"><br />

It’s been a few years since I attended any major motorcycle race events, and as I prepare to hit a few races this year I’ve started to formulate a photographic strategy to maximize the chance to come home with some memorable images. </span></div><div style="font: 12px Helvetica; margin: 0px; min-height: 14px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0px;"></span></div><div style="font: 12px Helvetica; margin: 0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0px;">As I look over images I've shot in the past, and in an effort to move toward some new kinds of images this year, it’s worthwhile to take stock of where I’ve been in the past. Several things emerge as strategies to help me come home with lots of good images. I’m going to share ten tips for shooting at large action sports events. I’ll use motorcycling in the following tips but these will generally apply to any kind of action sports event. </span></div><div style="font: 12px Helvetica; margin: 0px; min-height: 14px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0px;"></span></div><div style="font: 12px Helvetica; margin: 0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0px;">I’m going to assume you, like me, are stuck behind official boundaries. Press access is not available to most of us, yet many outstanding photo opportunities exist. With that in mind, here are my top 10 tips for photographic success at events this year.</span><br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a></div><div style="font: 12px Helvetica; margin: 0px;"></div><div style="font: 12px Helvetica; margin: 0px;"><br />
<br />
<li><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 12px;">Prepare yourself. In prior July trips to Laguna Seca in Monterey, CA, temperatures have ranged from 50s and foggy to over 100 in blinding bright sunlight. Things tend to be more consistent in, say Sonoma, CA at Infineon Raceway or Portland, OR at PIR (cool, rainy much of the time). Spend some time becoming familiar with typical and potential weather so you’re prepared. Pack appropriate clothing so you’ll be comfortable. Hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, lightweight gloves, breathable yet rain-repellant outerwear are all important accessories. I find I tend to run a little “hot” at most of these events, considering lugging gear around and the simple fact of wearing a photo back pack. I will go so far as to say that all of your clothing should be chosen with consideration to minimize chafing, breathe comfortable, and dry quickly. Durability and stink-resistance are a plus. Ensure your physical fitness will allow you to shoot steadily, think clearly, and generally enjoy the event while lugging your gear into interesting locations. After climbing the hill to the Corkscrew at Laguna Seca a couple of times you’ll know if you were ready or not. My advice: be ready!</span></li><br />
<br />
<li><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 12px;">Prepare your gear. Make sure your gear is clean, inside and out. Check and clean your sensor as well as the outside of all your gear and the inside of your bags. Charge all batteries and make sure you’ve got enough power for long days. You’re going into a “target rich” environment and as long as your energy holds out, you’ll have more photographic opportunities in one day than you’ll typically encounter in a month. I’ve shot 18 gig in an hour. Most photo equipment has some ability to tolerate challenging conditions but consider extra cleaning cloths if you’ll be sweating on your gear, and look at some of the many rain-protection solutions. Effective rain-wear for your photo gear can range from plastic bags with holes for the lens to special-made raingear from companies like Aquatech, Think Tank, and Kata. Make sure all your camera straps are comfortable and ready to endure some stress!</span></li><br />

</div><div style="font: 12px Helvetica; margin: 0px; min-height: 14px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0px;"></span></div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: small;"></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: small;"></span><br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; font-family: Arial; font-size: medium; margin-bottom: 0.5em; padding-bottom: 6px; padding-left: 6px; padding-right: 6px; padding-top: 6px; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="font-size: 11px; padding-top: 4px; text-align: center;">Get your stuff together, make sure everything's clean, batteries are charged, and you've got a comfortable, effective way to move it around once you're on location.<br />
<ul><li style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12px;">Research the event. It helps if you’ve been before, but even if it’s a new location there are plenty of resources for getting up to speed. Learn the storylines so you get images of the main protagonists. Have a good idea who’s going to run up front and get a sense of the momentum in the series. Who’s leading the points? Is the momentum swinging their way or is there an athlete who is rapidly closing? Are any of the key players injured or fighting adversity? All of these considerations are going to help you get images with lasting meaning.</span></li>
</ul><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 12px;"></span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 12px;"></span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 12px;"></span></span><br />
<ol style="list-style-type: decimal;"></ol><br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-bottom: 0.5em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-bottom: 6px; padding-left: 6px; padding-right: 6px; padding-top: 6px; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="font-size: 11px; padding-top: 4px; text-align: center;">Nicky Hayden pulls the trigger out of turn 3 at Laguna Seca in practice for the 2006 MotoGP event there. He went on to become World Champion later that year. </td></tr>
</tbody></table></div><ul><li style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12px;">Take the right gear and make sure you can use it effectively. <span style="font-size: x-small;">Reserve</span> any rented equipment you’ll need. Most of the time you’ll benefit from longer, faster glass than you currently own. There are lots of great rental houses these days. Get in line early for that 300 f2.8 or 200-400 f4 you’ve been jonesing to try out. Getting a nice sharp photo without raising your ISO is harder than you think, especially in the early morning hours or on an overcast day. Do yourself a favor and spend a little more to get that extra f-stop. Read up on the proper, effective use of any equipment that you don’t currently have experience with, but don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone in terms of gear choices. </span></li>
<li style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12px;">Get access. Purchase any sort of “pit pass” you can get your hands on. These are usually available affordably, and if you put in your time you can get close ups of many of the athletes and their equipment. While you’re walking around you’ll find lots of signs indicating where you can and cannot go. Don’t break rules (unless you’re willing to get kicked out!) but get creative! There are lots of ways to improve your viewpoint: find something to stand on to get some elevation, find places where there are good sightlines, shorter distances between the fence and the track, back up a bit so that you can get some elevation and get the fence out of the way. (You’ll need a longer lens now, see #4.) One benefit of smaller, local events is that you can often get close if you just ask. Identify the event coordinator and ask where you can stand. You’ll be surprised! The answer I often get is “Wherever you want, just don’t stand in the landing zone!” Don’t forget to watch your backgrounds while you set up your shot.</span></li>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="font-size: 11px; padding-top: 4px; text-align: center;">...and the people.</td></tr>
</tbody></table></div><ul><li style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12px;">Get to work early. Make sure to arrive at a multi-day event on the first or second day. Once you’ve quickly taken stock of likely opportunities and where the light will be at various times of day, get to work. Crowds will be smaller and the fenceline less crowded on practice and qualifying days. My favorite <i>modus operandi</i> is to work my butt off on Thursday and Friday, then ease up for the last day or two. Get tons of great images right away, then leave the last day or two to fill any potential small gaps in your catalog while spending most of the time enjoying the racing and the event with your friends and accomplices. On race day there are rarely any more “must have” shots, except for the race itself. Races go by quickly and the action can be much more intense. If you’re photographing one place, something crucial will inevitably happen somewhere else. In consideration that on race day the crowds will be at their peak and your ability to move freely will be severely restricted, why not leave the race shots to those with the best access (that is, look forward to seeing race shots the next day on your favorite web site), sit back with a cold beverage and some snacks, and spend the day enjoying the races with your friends. </span></li>
<li style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12px;">Don’t forget the whole scene. Take pictures of your friends taking in the event, around the campsite, on the way to and from the track, around the vendor area. There are a TON of great images to be made involving the scene. You’ll find interesting people and lots of off-track action. For the men: I can’t go too far down this next path without getting some heat here at home, but... Umbrella girls and models are everywhere at these events. Do Not Be Shy. Walk up, say Hi, ask if you can take your picture. Guess what, the answer is almost always YES because that is what they’re THERE FOR. Have fun. Extra credit: use fill flash, bring off-camera flash or a quick scrim or reflector to help with harsh mid-day light. </span></li>

</span></span></div><ul><li style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12px;">Take lots of images. For most of us it’s a rare bonus to attend a big event. Take more images than you think you’ll need. In catching the action, you’ll be trying things you may not try often. I guarantee you’ll be stressing your camera’s autofocus ability to the max, and every shot will <i>not</i> be sharp. Get yourself into position to enjoy some repetition. Get all of your favorite athletes from every position if you can. Set your camera’s frame rate to the max and hammer the shutter. Contrary to popular dogma, digital images are not free. But they’re way cheaper than burning film. Let ‘er rip!</span></li>
<li style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12px;">Make sure your data is safe. Bring some electronic means to duplicate your data. Options include extra memory cards (they’ve gotten relatively cheap if you haven’t checked lately), your laptop and an extra hard drive or two, or one of the special-purpose image storage devices such as the Epson P7000. A laptop is nice for quickly reviewing your images each day, to make sure you have the shots you thought you were getting. More than once I've learned something overnight and reshot it the next day, with much better results.</span></li>
<li style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12px;">Here’s a bonus tip. Enjoy “main event” day. I guarantee that if you have your eye to the viewfinder you’ll miss something important. There are other people who are getting paid to shoot the main event (rather than being there primarily for the enjoyment). Leave the “finals” images to the pros with better event access than you have, and enjoy the day with your friends and family.</span></li>

<div style="font: 12px Helvetica; margin: 0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0px;">So there’s a quick take on 10 (or so) tips to help you enjoy the Big Event and come back with some photos you’ll cherish long into the future. Although I’ve focused on motorcycle racing images to illustrate this post, most of these pointers apply, with minor modification, to many other exciting outdoor events.</span></div><div style="font: 12px Helvetica; margin: 0px; min-height: 14px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0px;"></span></div><div style="font: 12px Helvetica; margin: 0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0px;">Do you have any tips to add? Looking through the LR3 library, working on keywording and ranking, etc. Thought I'd share this image from last night's sunset. Sort of a precursor to yesterday's blog post, and not really what I felt like I was there to do, but thought it was interesting anyway. The composition is identical to the previous image as it was difficult to safely crawl around on the wet lava in the dying light. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

Something caught my attention on the wooden post nearest the table. As Hawaiian visitors for the last half a century will agree, it’s not unusual to see geckos around dwellings. Precisely how they arrived on these islands is not known, but several species of small geckos have been commonplace since at least 1940, perhaps long before. Polynesian imports, the usual suspects are various shades of grey, beige and brown, and all look quite similar. They’re highly nocturnal, becoming active only after the sun sets and often seen hunting bugs near porch lights late into the evening. This morning it took a few seconds for the situation to correctly register in my brain - “Hey, it’s not dark, and this one’s GREEN!” Wahoo!!!</div><div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; min-height: 14.0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0px;"></span></div><div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0px;">Since long before my first visit to the Hawaiian islands I’ve been aware that a few species of Day Geckos run wild there. Indigenous to Madagascar, individuals of a couple of species, including the Gold Dust Day Gecko (<i>Phelsuma lauticauda</i>) and Orange-Spotted Day Gecko (<i>Phelsuma guimbeaui</i>), were released by hobbyists. More recently Giant Day Geckos (<i>Phelsuma madagascariensis</i>) appeared and persist in at least one neighborhood in Oahu. A long time ago, in what seems like a different lifetime, I kept a prolific pair of Giant Day Geckos and have been a huge fan ever since. </span></div><div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; min-height: 14.0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0px;"></span></div><div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0px;">This morning we were in for a tiny, orange-flecked, green thrill as we were visited by a tiny Gold Dust Day Gecko. One of the smaller species, these little guys give away absolutely nothing in flash to their larger cousins. Distant as they may be to their native Madagascar, it was really exciting seeing one “in the wild”. </span></div><div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; min-height: 14.0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0px;"></span></div><div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0px;">My camera was nearby on the tripod, having finished a quick flurry of activity while the sun rose this morning. Poor Suzanne was thinking I might sit still long enough to have one complete meal without interruption. This morning, no luck! I dashed for the camera, yanked it off the tripod, swung through the bungalow to change the wide angle zoom for the 105 mm macro, cranked up the ISO, squeezed down the aperture, and hoped there would be enough shutter speed to avoid motion blur. The bright sunlight would help. I slowly crept up on the tiny lizard and mashed the shutter, focusing manually and hoping like mad there’d be a sharp frame. </span></div><div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0px;"><br />
